Meet Isaac
Isaac saw the trades as an opportunity after the military when they were recommended to him by a friend. Since starting at IES, he’s only become more intrigued by the electrical trade.
“I’m learning a lot from all the people at IES. They’ve taken me under their wing and shown me how things are done and ways to do things better, faster, and more productively. They’ve expand my knowledge.”
Meet Kendall
Kendall likes that every day is different when working in the electrical field. He’s always learning something new and is able to work on various sites. He appreciates that IES San Antonio’s work culture emphasizes safety and believes in practicing safety both at work and at home, saying that “safety is always first.”
“Safety is always first. I know it’s redundant, it’s said all the time, but if you don’t practice safety—not only at work, but at home—you’re gonna make mistakes and you’re gonna get hurt. So safety has got to be in everything you do from the time you put your socks on to the time you take your hardhat off at the end of the day. You’ve got to preach it and you’ve got to believe it because it really works.”
Meet Mario
Mario was in the military for 3+ years, but after getting out, made the decision to join the electrical trade in order to make enough money to retire. He’s been an electrician for over 7 years now and enjoys the feeling of pride he experiences working in his field. Mario loves seafood—crab legs, in particular. He enjoys cooking and watching football, repping the Chicago Bears and Florida Gators (his college football team).
“Everybody that I’ve met so far at IES has been pretty helpful and informative. You can go to your supervisor and ask him questions without worrying about him looking at you like you’re a knucklehead. They take the time to actually teach and develop us as electricians instead of saying ‘go figure it out.'”
Meet Carlos
Carlos enjoys the hands-on aspect of electrical work and being able to have a hand in the success of his community. He takes a great deal of pride in the idea of his work benefiting others. He believes it’s important to pass down knowledge and encourages both his family and his IES team to “learn as much as they can about everything.”
“Being able to say ‘I helped build this’… It’s a sense of pride that I take—being included in the community, building schools, and stuff like that for the future generations.”
Meet Hannah
Though she hasn’t been in the trades for long, Hannah has enjoyed her experience so far. The job can sometimes be challenging, but she feels that completing difficult tasks on her own is empowering and only pushes her to keep going. Hannah is very enthusiastic about more women joining the trades and offers advice to those who are interested, always telling them, “You can do it too! Just go for it.”
“I’d say I love this job more than any other job I’ve ever had… I look forward to going to work! If anything it’s extremely empowering when I’m doing difficult tasks and I’m successful in it.”
Meet Angel
As a Lead, part of Angel’s job is to head a team of electricians at IES and he does this well. He thinks of his team members as family and cares deeply for each of them, prioritizing their safety and even sometimes rewarding them all with tacos after a hard day’s work.
“Ever since I’ve been a Lead, the thing I’ve enjoyed the most is being able to admire my crew and their work and being able to take pride in how good it’s turning out to look.”
Meet David
David first became an electrician back in 2005, but put electrical work on pause for a period of time. At the beginning of 2024, however, he rejoined the trade. He appreciates the feeling of accomplishment that comes with his work and likes knowing that his work will benefit others in the future. In his free time, David enjoys brisket and barbecuing.
“I get to go home to my family with all of my digits and enjoy my time at work knowing I’ll be safe and won’t get hurt as long as I do things according to the safety standards.”
Meet Arturo
Arturo’s curiosity of electrical work and being a part of a team are what led him to join the trade 7 years ago. He likes the fact that his work allows him to connect with people from various backgrounds, along with the fact that he’s always learning something new.
“The most challenging part of our work is mainly the physical part. But what helps is just having the mentality that you can do it. You can get through hard days, hot days, And it helps knowing that you’ve got people that support no matter what.”
Meet Johnathan
Johnathan felt that traditional schooling wasn’t for him, which is what motivated him to pursue a trade. His goal when he first got into the electrical trade was to become a journeyman.
“Safety is the most important thing to me. I have a kid, so at the end of the day my job is to go home safe to my kid.”
Meet Michael
Michael joined the trades as a Field Safety Manager because he felt that being able to help others would make it a rewarding job. To Michael, safety is “just having everyone’s back…helping them stay safe, be in the field, go home, and maybe help someone build a better, safer culture for themselves.” During his free time, Michael has been known to eat an entire box of cereal in one sitting!
“For it being such a big company it’s a great culture. They thrive on teaching people the right way. It’s a place where people with a lot of experience are willing to teach people with less.”
Meet Codi
Codi has always worked with his hands and comes from a family that has done the same. Once he was exposed to electrical work and was able to “get my feet wet a little bit, I just kind of dove in.” Codi appreciates that his work as an electrician has not only given him the ability to provide for his loved ones, but is also a source of meaning in his life.
“What I enjoy most about what I do is learning. Especially in electrical, there’s always a new avenue of work and I enjoy learning new tricks of the trade.”
Meet Keynan
Hailing from the Hawaiian Islands, Keynan joined a trade thanks, in part, to his dad, who was a carpenter. Though he considered following in his dad’s footsteps, he ultimately chose the electrical trade and has now been an electrician for over 25 years!
“I like seeing my work come to a finish. You see the lighting, you see the outlets, you see the machines, and you see how they work. That’s something that’s rewarding to me—seeing the outcome of your work.”
